How to Avoid Phishing as You Browse the World Wide Web
Defined Tag: Phishing. One of the most common and prevalent ways that people find themselves trapped in the world of identity theft is through phishing scams. Well, if you are not aware of what a phishing scam is, then you should start to understand about it. Technically, it is when a scam artist creates a website that has the entire look, feel and appearance of a normal website like Bank of America, Paypal or eBay. How does phishing work? First of all, the scam artist sends out random emails to any number of people, similar to a fisherman who would cast his line out to the fish in an ocean or lake. If you then decide to click on the link to the scam artist’s website that is enclosed in the email, you will then be required to enter in all of your personal information into the website. The website might resemble the original website, but it has actually been created for nefarious reasons by a scam artist. Fortunately, for most people, there are still ways to prevent them from being scammed. Even though the number of phishing related scams have been on the rise in the past few years, the number of scam prevention software on the market to combat such scams has also greatly increased, and this means that it is possible that phishing scams are thwarted before they ever become a problem. One of the most important tools in your arsenal to avoid phishing scams is to be observant and vigilant went you go to a website. Always check the website address that you are going to, especially if it was sent to you in an email. If the website address does not look same to the address of the real site that you know, then it is almost always a fake. In addition, right now most modern internet browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 have built in phishing filters that can warn you if you ever visit a website that is a known phishing scam site. If you do not have such a filter installed in your computer, you can get some scam filter software that can help to filter out such scams. Finally, as a last line of defense, if you already have your email spam filter set up properly, then it should automatically filter out at least ninety percent of the phishing emails you receive in the first place. Do not be too over excited if you receive email claiming to be from your bank asking for your account information. Sometimes these emails even entice you with cash money when you complete a certain task. My word of advice is, do not be too greedy. Chances are that you will lose your money before even receiving any cash. Remember, legal companies like banks will not ask you for your account information. So always take note of that. So, while you surf the World Wide Web next time, always stay alert and you can be sure to avoid phishing scams. To a safe internet experience!
